REP STRATA Weighted Vest Review: Built Well, But Not for Everyone

Price and Setup
The vest itself costs $110, and depending on which plate size you choose, you’ll spend another $55 to $85 on plates. So you’re looking at around $200 for the full setup. The vest allows you to evenly distribute weight between the front and back with secure Velcro flaps. You open the bottom, slide the plate in, and strap it down using multiple layers of Velcro. Once it’s locked in, it’s not going anywhere.
You also get a surprisingly handy storage pocket on both the front and back. The front can hold your phone, keys, or gels if you’re running. There’s another full pocket on the back too, which adds versatility.
Fit and Adjustability
One thing I appreciate is the ability to adjust how high or low the vest sits on your torso. You can detach the shoulder Velcro, move it forward or back, and reseal it depending on your height and build. The sides also have Velcro straps that wrap around and secure you in tightly. It’s a snug fit once you’ve adjusted it, though getting it on and off can be a bit of a struggle, especially when it’s loaded with heavier plates.
Pros
✅Looks Awesome– The vest has a tactical, military-style look. I went with the green version, which looks sharp, but there’s also a black version available.
✅Functional Storage– The front and back pockets are great for carrying essentials during runs or workouts.
✅Solid Build and Adjustability– It’s made from durable materials with adjustable shoulders and sides to customize your fit.
✅Comfortable Padding– The inside padding is firm yet breathable. It’s about as comfortable as you can expect a weighted vest to be.
Cons
❌Hard to Adjust Mid-Workout– Once you’re sweaty and tired, tightening or loosening the side straps can get frustrating. They can stick and be tough to move.
❌Shoulder Chafing– This one is a big deal for me. After a few workouts in a tank top, I noticed significant shoulder rubbing and bruising on the front of my shoulders. The straps dig in during overhead movements like presses or pull-ups.
❌One Size Fits All– The vest only comes in one size, which makes it tough for people with smaller frames or narrower shoulders to get a perfect fit.
My Final Thoughts
I really wanted to love the REP Strata Weighted Vest. It checks a lot of boxes: it’s well-built, looks great, and performs well for most bodyweight workouts. But the shoulder discomfort during pressing and overhead movements might be a dealbreaker for me personally.
I’m currently testing out the 5.11 Tactical Vest to see if it fits better, but if you have broader shoulders or plan to use the vest mostly for running, push-ups, lunges, or squats, this could be a great option for you.
REP makes quality gear, and this vest is no exception in terms of craftsmanship. It just might not be the best fit for everyone’s body type.
